The Deep Below
By Jack Keys
I bury myself in the sand,
Crawl deeper down into the land;
My heartstrings unfurled,
I hide from the world
In the one way I know that I can.
And deeper and deeper below,
No friends or well wishes in tow,
I find a warm hearth
Far down in the Earth,
And curl up in my new home.
Locked away, now I finally sleep
Left alone with my thoughts and my dreams;
And time slows to meet
A silent defeat;
The world above ceases to be.
But changed from the pressure and heat,
My cocoon becomes mirrored; I see
And the ugliest sight,
Hidden here from the light?
The decay taken root within me.
